Cyber Essentials

This is a government backed, industry supported scheme aimed at helping organisations protect themselves against common cyber threats.

To attain a Cyber Essentials badge an organization has to complete a self-assessment questionnaire, with responses independently reviewed by an external certifying body. These questions require an in-depth understanding of your computer network and IT infrastructure.

Cyber Insurance

Cyber insurance is an insurance policy designed to cover the cost of restoring the loss of business, reputation or income caused from internet based risks or cyber-attack.

Cyber Threats

The possibility of a malicious attempt to damage or disrupt a computer system or network.

Cyber Security Certification

Cyber security certification can be gained by pursuing the Cyber Essentials Scheme.

DoS – Denial of service attack

This is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users, such as to temporarily or indefinitely interrupt or suspend services of a host connected to the internet.

Malware

Whale phishing is a phishing attack that is specifically aimed at very senior or wealthy individuals who are deemed ‘big phish’ or ‘whales’.

Penetration Testing

Also known as ‘Pen Testing’. This is the practice of testing a computer or network for vulnerabilities that could be exploited by an attacker.

Phishing

This is the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from a reputable source in order to encourage individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords, credit card numbers, as well as, money through indirect means.

Ransomware

An attack that covertly installs malware that encrypts a victim’s files and will not return a decryption key until a ransom payment is made.

Spear Phishing

Spear phishing is a fraud attempt utilizing email spoofing to target a specific organization. The emails seek unauthorized access to confidential data to gain trade secrets, military information or financial gain.

Whale Phishing
