• Forest Way School reduces DR costs whilst improving Recovery Time Objective (RTO)

Forest Way is a co-educational special school for children from primary age through to sixth form, based in Leicestershire. The school has over 200 pupils and a staff of 145.

Challenge

Like many schools, Forest Way was facing the need to protect a rapidly increasing amount of data, as well as the different platforms and devices that the data lives on. Unfortunately, their legacy data protection was struggling to meet these increasing data protection needs.

In addition, the school had also recently decided to virtualise their server infrastructure which significantly changed their backup and recovery process. Head of IT, Mark Lewis said, “Every time the senior leadership team reviewed our business continuity plan, I was getting grilled because what we had wasn’t comprehensive or affordable”.

They needed to modernise their backup and disaster recovery capabilities, with a solution that would increase RTO, work within their tight budget, and protect a heterogenous environment. They had been experiencing weekly power outages so reliable and fast failover was also essential. And it had to be easy to use, to not put additional pressure on their limited IT resources.

Solution

Mark was convinced that Infrascale’s Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) solution would be ideal, after he saw how quick and easy it was to failover locally or in the cloud.

The DR cloud solution works on a scalable ‘pay as you go’ model, which also meant lower cost of ownership and lower storage costs when compared to the legacy system they were using.

The school’s legacy system didn’t support the Linux-based virtual machines. Infrascale protects any OS and server, which meant that they would only need to deploy a single solution and their mixed environment would be protected.

Forest Way chose to deploy cloud backup and recovery software, and an on-premise failover appliance, which replicates to the cloud. Mark said, “The setup for was a piece of cake and the onboarding team was fantastic to work with.”

Benefits

The key benefits for Forest School after deploying DRaaS were:

Improvement in RTO from hours to just minutes

Protection for the complete mixed environment from a single solution

An estimated 25% cost reduction in storage costs

Mark is very happy they adopted this solution, “On-site and off-site testing works as expected, and recent file-level restores have been much easier than with previous solutions.

“The best part is the peace of mind the rapid failover and reliability delivers. I don’t worry about business continuity reviews, because everything is protected and recoverable.

The solution is “...a much easier and comprehensive disaster recovery platform, without the enterprise price tag”.
