• Wearable technology being developed to help rehabilitate patients

While there are many apps and devices that help monitor the fitness of able-bodied people, much of this technology is unsuitable for patients in rehabilitation, according textile sensor company Sensoria.

In response the business has developed an app that can work in conjunction with smart socks to help wearers track their daily activity – including the number of steps, cadence and distance.

This works by using an anklet attached to the sock, which can communicate with the app via Bluetooth. The app’s interface is designed to be intuitive and highlight the wearer’s progress history, goals, steps, distance and total activity time.

Sensoria CEO Davide Vigano claimed that that studies have proven there is a direct correlation between activity and faster recovery time.

“Most wrist worn wearable devices cannot accurately detect the activity of people with limited mobility, such as elderly patients or patients recovering from surgery or using a walker.

Sensoria Walk aims to deliver a more accurate tool for patients and caregivers to track and evaluate their recovery progress,” he said.

Vigano added that the app could have applications beyond just rehabilitation, as it can also help improve quality of life for patients with persistent conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, where physical activity can improve balance, gait and motor condition.
